Blogs

Motime

I've used blogs with my young learners (YLs) as an extracurricular activity, so they can practice English outside of class and with teacher's from all over the world. And also as a curricular activity, so they can be introduced to blended learning and work collaboratively as a group, amongst themselves, and with teachers worldwide. I did exchanges between students in the past, but have now opted for teachers, because there is always someone available in any part of the world.

Photo Albums

Bubbleshare

I have created a photo album with screenshots taken by participants of the VWLL EVO session of a tour of Ciudad Bonita in Second Life. Used Bubbleshare. (Daf - Jan 28)

BubbleShare: Share photos - Find great Clip Art Images.

I also use Bubbleshare for illustrated tutorials, like these ones:

I have used photo albums to:

-- display my students' art work

Slide.com plugin error

-- upload photos my students took on a field trip to the Lisbon Zoo. The photos of the giraffes were specially taken for Daf, following a dialogue she had in the FwE2 blog with Gonçalo, a student, prior to the visit

This is a trial with Vocaroo. My comments: I don´t like the fact that we cannot control the volume. Good side: it is fast, and the recording can be embedded (Daf Jan 29)

Wikis

PBwiki

-- for remedial work

The idea came to my mind when I got two 6th grades that had had two different teachers in 5th grade. Some were quite weak and behind and I wanted to help them both in and outside of class, especially outside since in-class time wasn't enough for everything. Is it ever??!! That's when a wiki for "remedial work" came to my mind.

We had already finished a few units, so what I did was:
-- create a new page for each unit
-- upload the audio for the main dialogue (we have them in a CD that comes with the textbook)
-- have them listen to the dialogue, then read it in the textbook and, finally, listen and read
-- create a reading comprehension exercise about the dialogue in an interactive site where I could correct it (Quia is what I used) [exercise creators will be dealt with in detail in week 5]
-- post the grade in the corresponding unit page in the wiki and give feedback on mistakes
-- create other types of exercises, for different basic skills, that could be corrected online and have them see the result immediately.

This remedial work also influenced their grade. A few weak students did a great job and said this wiki had really helped them. It is extra work for the teacher, but worthwhile when you can help a few students.

I called the publisher in Lisbon - an affiliate of CUP - and asked if there were any problems in publishing the audio files. None whatsoever. The man was very happy and said that he wished more teachers did this type of work.   :-)

Voice

Using MP3 recordings on a class blog for pupils to listen to and comment on (or whatever else you fancy !).

My pupils love listening and recording,  but they are very noisy !!  - especially Sofyan and Omar who can be heard shouting at each other all the time !  (I work in a state school in a pretty run-down part of town at the moment - lovely kids but they can be very "lively !)

My idea is to get them to think about what makes a good podcast /audio recording - see how it goes !

For converting the audio file to MP3 I used media converter (in case you need to convert any type of file this is very good and doesn't need downloading - Helen (13/03/2009)
